I disagree. Understanding the why is huge and inseparable from understanding "what is happening here."

Jim stopped his car on the side of Wycliff road, got out, walked over to a patch of grass, knelt, and began weeping.

That night, after all the mourners had left, Jim drove back to Wycliff road, parked his car, and walked over to the spot where his wife had died. He knelt there, and for the first time felt the magnitude of his actions. He began to weep.

(Now in a real story, I probably wouldn't put everything in the second version in there, because the reader would know, but you get my point.)

Halo 4 doesn't have the Halo game market cornered on actions or events not being clearly explained, but what's frustrating for me is how they trust us to detect the size and shape of this giant iceberg of story hidden under the waves, yet they don't trust us at some crucial moments when they should. Case in point is the last (non-Didact) line of the game, where MC is talking to himself "about being a machine." The idea of MC talking to himself is horrible from the start, but the line is horrible, too. It's completely unnecessary, and I guarantee was put in there because of a failure of nerve. Someone was afraid we wouldn't get it, and I bet money there was debate about it, and fear won out. It's all the more disappointing because so many of the cutscenes were stellar, among the best I've ever seen in a game--that same scene included (I love Lasky's mocap). Sigh.
