In Response To: Re: Points on your H3 review (long) (Rockslider)

: As for the grav lift that got you onto the ship, what is the operating
: mechanism actually supposed to be? Is it simply that if you step onto it
: you'll automatically go up? If so, then yes that's a fair example of the
: game not letting things work as they should. Or does Cortana have to
: activate it somehow?

: Also, when you go up, I guess the floor of the ship must open up to let you
: through; yet I can't recall ever seeing a clear view of that. When you end
: up inside, you're on a raised disc. How is that disc structured so it can
: open to let you up? Is there a grav lift expert among us who knows what's
: going on?

I never understood that part either.

I think that gravlift bays should be tall cylinders with ringed ledges with lightbridge floors covering the center. Each ledge has vehicle storage, muster point and maintainance bays opening off them.

You drive and walk onto the lightbridge floors, the beam is activated, the floors switched off, and lots of units descend at once or in waves, one wave per ledge.

: Unlike with that control panel in H3, I can't think of any H1 example where a
: control panel nonsensically fails to work until you've wiped out all
: enemies or whatever. Can you?

Maybe I should test this. There are the SC panels, the security one and the map itself. There is the door ontrol at the start of TB. The lightbridge in Halo...

: That's what I thought was probably happening - to do with minimizing the
: game's workload. But at the expense of wrecking the realism? That's just
: crazy. At the very least, you'd think the game could hold off on doing any
: model-replacing until you've gone a decent distance away or something, so
: you don't notice it.

We don't know the constraints and resource pressures that the developers face. There are always tradeoffs. They may have to reduce the vegetation fade-in distance to compensate for larger dead-body fade-outs or reduce AI smarts or AI vision angles or vision distances.

They may be able to fix the problem by writting lots of code to freeze the physics on a model whilst they swop models. I don't know.

But the blue->red problem is probably an easier fix.

: Interesting. I'm not sure I've ever tried using it against Drones. But I was
: sure I'd specifically tested for homing when using it against Brutes - and
: it seemed that there was no homing. Guess I'll have to check again.

You can grab a FRG from the Brute in the group before the group at the dam bowl or from the FRG wielding Gold at the start of the first shielded tunnel encounter. Then you can try blasting the swarm that spawns when you approach the tunnel.

I just thought... I usually equip my marines with the FRGs. Its the NPCs who take out the Drones with the FRGs. Maybe they home for NPCs and not us.

But I 'think' I've had them home for me.

: But I'm guessing that you're specifically talking about multiplayer there. Do
: folk actually like these things in multiplayer then? Or are they
: considered a pain? In regard to just campaign mode, surely I'm not the
: only one who wishes they were absent?

They are a minor annoyance for me and add some danger spice, something to overcome. They aren't nearly as bad as h2 Legendary sniper Jackals. I quite like them.

Maybe you fight up closer than I do.

: I'm not sure I'll bother - it sounds like he might know Karate.

: In H1 I believe each Marine kept with his own voice, except for a few
: circumstances where a specific line was scripted to be delivered and it
: hadn't been recorded in that Marines's voice. An example that comes to
: mind is in AOTCR. After clearing the first snowfield of enemies, if you've
: got at least one Marine nearby you'll hear one of them giving a short
: "that's all of 'em" line, but it won't necessarily match his
: normal voice, as I recall. Things like that can break the realism
: somewhat, but it's nothing like as bad as the Ross lines, which stick out
: like a sore thumb.

As for the AotCR marine's line... I would revert to check point if I didn't hear, "Well they gave it their best shot but they didn't count on running into the biggest squad of marine badasses in the corp!". Its a Halo habit that I almost never break. I used to have it on my phone so I could get my Halo fix if I was away from home.

: The Ross thing means I can't really enjoy being with Marines like I can in H1
: - which is a major loss. Actually it's not just the Ross thing - it's also
: the fact that the Marines very quickly query you when you happen to be
: fairly close and looking in their general direction - which gets quite
: annoying. Bungie should've toned that behaviour way down.

Woss's voice is so distinctive. Even if you ignore the lithp, he doesn't sound like a hardened marine. OK, maybe he was a drafted art college student but he just sounds so fay.

I HATE it when that happens!

"Chief, have you something to tell me?"

Grrrrr....

I was once trying to rescue a bunch of marines in a Warthog that one of them had driven almost over the edge of the highway.

The driver got cheeky and I meleed them over the edge. I must be a psycho because it felt good :-) (Who says video games don't make people violent?)
