In Response To: Re: Exactly what I wanted to hear Matt! (Gorehead)
: As a very long-time Mac user, I am absolutely not an advocate for Microsoft,
: but the Bungie buyout and its results have made me reconsider a few
: things. First off, I'm probably not as avid a gamer as many who post here.
: I'm more of a Bungie fanatic than a game fanatic, in that most games
: aren't of the same quality as Bungie games. (Similarly, I love Macs, but
: I'm not, on the whole, a computer fanatic.) Because of the xbox, I
: considered, for the first time, the benefits of buying a console versus
: paying to get the same experience on my computer. We can argue about
: resolution differences and the like, but to get the processor speed, the
: memory, the video and sound cards, the speakers and the monitor that would
: give me a supreme experience with PC Halo would set me back much more than
: the xbox did. (And Palidan, I don't mean to antagonize anyone, especially
: those who truly don't have access to an xbox.)
: Depending on what the PC version is like, it may provide me with partial
: motivation to upgrade my computer anyway when the time comes, but for now,
: the xbox provides me with a great deal of enjoyment, and Microsoft will
: probably still lose money in my case because I'm not going to buy but a
: few of the very best games, and that's the only thing they're making a
: profit on. Plus, Bungie makes money off of me, which is fine--they deserve
: it.
: Another point. I appreciate that the buy-out allows Bungie's prodigious
: talent to not be as distracted by the cut-throat bottom line issues that
: plague so many other smallish game developers. That can be a good thing
: for those of us who want more great games, and not just more games.
: And another point. Regarding harm to the PC/Mac platform, just a reminder
: that it's been acknowledged that part of the strategy for the xbox was to
: encourage game development for ActiveX so that games could be easily
: ported to the PC, whereas otherwise, given the trends, game developers
: might abandon PC game development altogether. The quantities on console
: games are much higher, from what I can recall. If a game is created for a
: PC, then there's a good chance it will be ported to a Mac if it's any
: good.
: my two cents,
: Brad
I think you and I, Brad, are on the same wavelength here. Great post!
