In Response To: Re: Lol, pet cocaine (Mr Daax) : What's also confusing to me is this: so, if the powder came boxed, or : space-crated, in an empty ship, it was obviously sent there by someone. It : evolves from powder to, after a while, a parasite, to the flood, to : morphing into a super-intelligent-mass-mind-thing. Whoever sent it in the : first place, we think Precursors, was obviously aware of the dormant : potential of the powder, otherwise, why send powder in an empty space : ship? Did whoever sent it come across the flood and reduce them to powder : and ship them away? Or were they super good with science and stuff and : create the powder themselves? And in either case, why send something that : they knew could destroy all life in the galaxy? If the pheru didn't like : the powder, would it have still evolved into parasitic form in a few : hundred years? So many questions, and I'm not sure they are even the right : questions... I'm guessing they didn't neccessarily think it was sent as a weapon or anything. There were Precursor ruins all over the galaxy, finding an abandoned ship doesn't sound out of the question, and from what we learn at the end of Primordium, it's possible the Precursor's disguised the ship as a Human or Forerunner vessel or something, since the Flood is designed as a sort of test. We don't really know the particulars of everything because we only learn this information as a basic retelling hundreds of years after it happened. As for how the actual Flood powder came to be, it seems like the Precursors probably made it. They made the Forerunner and us, as a Type 0 civilization capable of creating and shaping life. Or maybe they discovered it and weaponized it, I seem to remember something about Flood originally coming from outside of our galaxy. Doesn't really matter either way. If you haven't read Primordium, the end of the book answers a lot of questions, while raising a million more, and why the Flood exists is spelled out.
