Canada, Australia, and other : colonies got along with them OK and had a clean break when they became : independent, but others, like the US and India, weren't so lucky. Although Nylund wants us to believe that conflict was inevitable, and it probably was given the conditions that prevailed at the time, I still suspect that the Earth gov established those conditions and so share responsibility for them. I also think that, given their actions in establishing the Spartan program and given the basic nature of their government - it seems unlikely that they would ever come to a more peaceful and less (totalitarian?) resolution to the problem. Of course its possible that they could put down dissent and then, over time, relax their oppression and, in time, things could relax and people could get on better and colonies finally get some form of government that they would be happy with. But it just looks like the Spartan solution, combined with the military government is not a short term recipe for a free state. It looks like the Spartan role would be as enforcers for an oppressive regime. Their role as heroes is only as a result of being our best defense against genocide. Remove that threat and they revert to being tools of the state - military occupation of colonies or special forces tasked to annihilate innies. I suppose this is OK(ish) if the Spartans are only killing people who are clearly terrorists but how would the Brits have classified the American militias back in the 1770s? Blacks speech leads me to suspect that any non-Buddhist opposition to Earth rule would be classified as terrorism. I play as a Spartan which is OK when I'm killing beings that want to exterminate my race. I would be uncomfortable as a Spartan if I lost that, protector, role. I have reservations about being a Spartan. -PS I don't really think that the earth gov is totalitarian in nature. IMO totalitarianism treats seeks to control what we think. They make certain thoughts a crime or, in practical terms, the EXPRESSION of certain thoughts is treated as a crime. Lasky was free to express his thoughts in the academy and I don't believe that this was because he had a privileged position. Indeed he got a surprising amount of leeway given where he was. I did notice that he only expressed contrary opinions to his fellow cadets. :-)
