In Response To: Re: AI Rampancy untouched (General Vagueness) : What are you talking about? Almost every society is like that. I think its the nepotism. I prefer democracies, the least bad form of government. The military has too much say in government in the Haloverse and now we have the suggestion that who your parent is gives you privileged entry into the military academies that determine who gets to be an officer and therefore who has the privilege to send their own children to the same academies. It seems a touch too cozy an arrangement. You might expect the military to be a meritocracy, though it is made of people so you know personal politics will be involved, nevertheless secure should mean: don't mess with this! and people's advancement in the military should be based solely on accomplishment. It may be that the powerful families are producing good officer candidates but we have seen from history that you can't expect this to hold for every generation. Maybe this would lead to families losing power but we can guess this would lead to problems because families become used to privilege and may not go gracefully. The Halo games are war games so, of course, they concentrate on the military but even accounting for that it appears that the military has too much influence in their society and I don't think that is healthy. I took an immediate dislike to gen Black, that student feels comfortable hacking secure systems because he 'knows' Dima's mom will say it's OK, and they haven't anticipated that colonies will, in time, expect autonomy. The innies aren't being nice but it's not like you couldn't foresee these problems arising and I don't think that Spartans are the best answer to giving your citizens good lives. Innies weren't born innies. They were citizens who decided that they didn't want to remain citizens because they didn't like their marginalized position in your society. I don't know if self governance is a right but I do see it as a reasonable expectation and aspiration. I think that it would have been better to anticipate future citizen's needs and to have made allowance for transition or devolution of power, to grant a degree of autonomy to the colonies in the hope that we could maintain peaceful co-existence and cordial and profitable business relations with them. I would prefer this to inventing more effective ways of killing them or suppressing dissent. Imagine if the Brits had had Spartans in the 1770s. Actually maybe things would have calmed down after Washington and his ilk had been put down and the uppity yanks had been put in their place. But could the Brits have maintained the peace without constant suppression given the continuing inequities of the colonial situation? Getting back to the nepotism... I think that:Black's attitude towards the innies, his demonizing and misrepresentation of their case, the obvious self interest of the ruling families - suggests that it is the attitude of those in power and the nature of their government that has lead to the problems arising in the first place and also suggest that a fair solution will not be forthcoming. Adding Spartans into this mixture just makes the problem worse. I don't think that having more effective means of suppressing your citizens leads to a fairer society. Just a thought... maybe this could be developed and the next set of games after the Reclaimer Saga could feature internal war between humans, Spartan Vs Anti-Spartans, a Mass Effect style game were you get to chose the outcome based on your political leanings and personal biases.
You get to make difficult choices and there is a lot of forum friction and political debate. ;-) Wu will love that one.
