Most of her weirdness was caused by the violent : interaction with the artifact and the rebuilding process. And again I : don't think it was ever hinted that she could be a villain, at least not : very strongly. Though maybe you're thinking of an example I'm not? I'm : much more familiar with the radio drama than the ARG part. I just wasn't : able to participate much during that time besides listening as other : people did awesome things and unlocked axons. Yeah, I tend to consider Melissa's "craziness" a combination of the fact that she's ~7 years old, and that her personality fragments were...compromised, to say the least. Especially during the artifact re-activation at the climax. Chaos. I believe if that chapter were depicted cinematically, Melissa/Durga could be depicted as chaotic if not worse, as Cortana here. And I wouldn't say Cortana's "bad" side equates to villainy insomuch as likely a misguided hero (chaotic good, perhaps?) though we won't know that until the game I suppose :) To me, it doesn't make sense that rampancy would make an AI "Evil", but rather reduce or remove any ethical/moral safeguards against actions that could be considered harmful or dangerous... splitting hairs, perhaps, though. There was definitely more villain-like activity in the 2004 Melissa AI, but primarily against herself (Sleeping Princess vs The Queen, eg), but again probably because that was where her conscious focus was. I firmly believe had Melissa found us to be the problem to be a threat, she could have played much a villain to us than she was. In a way, it's good we were on her side (as her 'crew'), which was something that in a way kept her 'sane' until she was reconstituted. Having just finished Primordium, I'm more than ever convinced that ILB fiction and how it depicted Smart AIs is very feasibly a consistent story per Halo canon. * TL;DR: Cortana or Melissa as "evil" from rampancy? Nah. Chaotic good perhaps. Rampancy effectively weakens the limitations we humans may consider what makes one "good", thus dangerous; villain at worst -- though Cortana's actions in Halo 4 may prove that point wrong; hopefully not. Melissa's villainy was directed at herself (and Covenant hijacker) in 2004, and her chaotic villainy was quite tangible at the climax in the audio - both instances for Melissa were a combination of onset of rampancy and effect of the forerunner artifact. That is to say, Cortana's rampancy is in a different context than Melissa (as Melissa's was affected by the artifact, whereas Cortana's is "pure", as it were)
