I very much doubt that the money that retailers spend to secure pre-order exclusives is a very large fraction of development cost. : How is it unique to have it all if it is just given to you? It's not unique. But why should it be? If I go to buy a game, I'd like to get the whole game. We're dealing with a market in which it is completely feasible to sell consolidated, complete products. : I hope somebody comes up with a compelling reason why
You notice how, in the last half decade, player progression systems have stepped up release-by-release? You notice how the same thing has, albeit slower, been happening with exclusives? These things are potential slippery slopes. I don't think that this will be a huge annoyance in Halo 4. But it quite possibly won't be long before 343i decides we're warmed up enough to start throwing gameplay exclusives at us. Buy a game from a specific retailer to get an advantage in multiplayer? Buy a game from a specific retailer in order to gain access to a campaign mission? These are things that people in industry have done for ages, but which Halo has generally been free of. At what point does it become problematic for you?
