In Response To: "Difficulty Balance in Halo" Redux. *long-ish* (Gravemind) I agree with your general conclusions. Exactly what constitutes an overpowered enemy is probably up to individual opinion. It's probably fair to say it's an enemy that kills you in less time than you can legitimately be expected to react and prevent it - but obviously that will vary from person to person. I'm with you on the elite melee attacks in Halo 2. I can still distinctly remember the first time I was killed by a single melee from an elite (or at least, the first time it was clear to me that I shouldn't have died). It was out front of the first structure on Delta Halo. I was on normal difficulty, with full shields, and the melee came from the front, and my super-soldier dropped to the ground. I still remember my mouth dropping open, and I just stared at the screen in total silence. Based on all my Halo experience to date at that point (Halo 1 of course) that should not have happened on normal difficulty. I should have easily won a melee contest on normal. But it did happen, and it wasn't the last time. I liked Reach's implementation - elites are still very dangerous at close range, but they can be dodged. And of course, the Halo 2 jackal snipers. I think we're all aware of the frustrations there. To this day, I have not technically beaten all of Halo 2 on legendary, because I could never get past the waterfall sniper pit. Different people have different experiences, though. I've never found the Regret fight particularly difficult, for instance. I never really thought about what an improvement the Reach focus rifle was. It's still powerful, but you have a chance to react when you get hit.
