I've had bad checkpoints like that in Halo 1 very rarely (I was goofing around on SC and drove a Warthog off the platform to try to get to the bottom of the map room's shaft; I got a checkpoint in midair), but when you get them, you're stuck with them and you're probably going to have to restart the level. This was fixed in later games where if you get a bad checkpoint and keep dying repeatedly within seconds of respawning, the game will eventually sent you back to the checkpoint before your current one.
