Technically there were no walls rising from the sides of the ring in Halo 1 or 2. The only skybox ring structure we saw in Halo 1 and 2 had the Halo ring perfectly symmetrical, which means strictly speaking, each place we've been on a Halo ring (where the ring in the sky is present) we've been in the geographical center of the ring width-wise. Only on Tempest have wee seen a skybox ring skewed towards one edge enough we can see a side wall. On the actual Halo 1 ring model, the surface was flat and the 'sides' of the ring were below the surface, not jutting up over it. Did this diagram years ago, but here's the actual shape of a cross-section of the Halo 1 ring:
