: Halo is mentioned in #3.

Sequels are not bad in video games! They are only bad if you think about a sequel from a story perspective.

Sequels are GOOD. You have a game with some mechanics that are fun. They are good, but they could be better. So, a sequel comes along, and you IMPROVE the mechanics. With the next sequel you IMPROVE THEM MORE. Each new sequel gives you a better more refined game.

If all you're doing with you video game sequel is giving your characters another story to finish, then yes that's terrible. If you're doing it RIGHT though, and using it as an opportunity for refinement, then it is a very good thing.

We are not on the edge of creative bankruptcy because of sequels; we are on the edge of creative bankruptcy because developers are less concerned with making games with excellent mechanics anymore, and more concerned with making 'experiences', 'narratives', or 'franchises'.
