But the Chief had his story in the games. His purpose was to destroy Halo and the Flood.
The books are the EXPANDED universe. Sure, Chief was the main character in TFoR and First Strike, but it wasn't ABOUT him. First Strike and TFoR was just as much about the other spartans as it was about John.

The destruction of Reach, one of the most important events in Halo canon, took a miniscule part of a book that barely focused on it. First Strike had more to do with Reach's fall then the titular book did.
