In Response To: TFoR Redo? (Riceatron)

: Why can't 343i take a different route? Not throw out, but fix.

Yes. Some fixing needs to be done.

: The Fall of Reach was a good tie-in novel when all we had was Halo CE, but it
: wasn't a particularly good BOOK. Nor was it a compelling story. Like
: Dervish said, it's a series of set-pieces strung together with timeskips.

Huh. Like Reach? Or Halo: CE?
You seem to be one of the few who doesn't like T-4 (It's phonetically the same). I don't say this meaning that you are alone, or you're in the minority so please shut up. I just say that many simply don't agree.

: How about a re-do?
: Two novels.
: Halo : Spartans
: Halo : Reachfall

Halo: Reachfall... Heh, no.
As for going back and saying "Please disregard the old version, this is the definitive edition", there's a funny thing about it.
It doesn't work.
Let's consider the case of Arthur C. Clarke. He once wrote a novella called "Against the Fall of Night", sometime in 1953. In 1956, he released "The City and the Stars", a complete rewrite and expansion of the former. And, in 1990, James Nicoll wrote "Beyond the Fall of Night." The less said about that piece of crap, the better.

The thing is, Clarke expected "City and the Stars" to eclipse "Beyond the Fall of Night", but that really didn't happen. Many fans preferred the first version, and both are in circulation today.

So, in truth, I don't want two novels to march all over the original. I want the original fixed like 343i said it was going to be! I mean, they screw up and get the wrong version reprinted, and we're supposed to live with that? I don't think so.

Now, looking at the others, I've noticed 343i's work. Little things have been corrected, things like Locklear being unable to pick up the FRG, or the BR-55 being completely new to the Spartans.

: Spartans would would go over the origins of the Spartan-II's, up until the
: emergence of the Covenant. Focus more on individual characters, losing the
: titles that made Kelly 'Like the Master Chief but Faster' or Linda 'like
: the chief but better at sniping'
: Make them real characters. With their own motives and reasons. People like
: Jorge, who harbor sympathies for who their fighting but commit to their
: duty because they don't agree with their methods.
: Focus on the factor of the insurrectionists.

: Reachfall would be like Reach. Tell the story of the planet, and how it died.
: Create soldiers, flesh out the Spartans more by placing them in an
: unwinnable situation.
: Do what Bungie tried to do.

: Now, for the canon, it wouldn't THROW OUT things, but it would replace and
: expand. We have had the issue with the number of S-II's in the field since
: Legends and Cole Protocol, but why not fix that?

Odd. 'Cause, y'see, the biggest part of the Spartan Mystique to me was that they won. They were the Elite who managed to survive the war until the end, when they were put into an absolutely unwinnable position, and even then they halted the Covenant advance for a while.

Seeing Spartans die because somebody had to wear the red shirt once an episode, fighting an engagement so balls-to-the-padded-wall contrived that a two year old could see the problems... it just killed it for me. So pardon me if I chose to pretend that Halo Legends never existed and Halo Wars was an unrelated console RPG done by a dying company desperate to rake in cash to save its sorry hide.

: Just re-do TFoR and make it mesh more, and by doing that, make it better.

Meh. I think it's possible to reconcile TFoR and the rest of the canon without rewriting the whole thing.
