History, kinda long:
Long ago when I ran a game store, the rep from Sony would come in with a disc and we'd demo the newest release for a while before he cruelly took it away. He'd take the game to stores to try and snag orders. If the press wanted to review the game, he ran them off a copy and sent it to them. Nintendo would gather all of the journalists together and send them to Nintendo HQ and they could spend time playing the game. They could not have a copy of the game to review.
Sony got lazy and over time they were sending out unreleased and unfinished games to retailers. Piracy was rampant.
What happened next wasn't a shock, but EB Games started opening up stores everywhere. Now the stores never dealt with the reps from store to store, just ordered games and then allocated amounts to each store. No need for a rep to go to each store to see the managers as they weren't ordering anymore. Head office was. So, the days of the games rep died.
The digital era is crap. "Bricks and mortar" is a saying we have in the office. Who wants to mess with digital distribution when you have more chance of protecting your sh*t with a physical product?
