In Response To: Re: Agreed (SonofMacPhisto) Okay. I can do that. For Invasion, loadouts are pre-defined by Bungie. If you want to spawn with a sword when playing as an Elite, you'll have to use whatever AA comes with it. It's a package deal and you can't mix & match, at least not in matchmaking. In the beta, the Elites' Gladiator loadouts had Evade as their AA, while the Spartans' Operator loadouts had Armor Lock. According to recent videos, the Gladiator loadouts have replaced Evade with Hologram while Operator still has Armor Lock. So, in straight up close-quarters combat, a Spartan Operator has the advantage over an Elite Gladiator, as the Spartan has two ways with which to block the sword while the Elite has no way to block the shotgun, that is unless the holograms are capable of actually absorbing attacks. Of course, we could just completely ignore sword-start loadouts and just focus on someone with any AA having the sword, as would be the case in non-Invasion gametypes since the sword is a regular power weapon pickup. Even in this case, the sword will always have that built-in weakness that its counterparts lack, and even taking AAs into account it still all boils down to weapon vs. weapon comparisons. As we saw in the beta, someone with Sprint+Hammer can run roughshod over other players far more effectively than someone with Sword+Sprint, Sword+Camo, or Sword+Anything really. The sword forces more conservative play (i.e. camping/ambushes), thus making it most compatible with AAs that best reward such tactics (Active Camo most notably), while the shotgun and hammer reward both those tactics and aggressive charging since there is no risk of being blocked by a mere melee, thus giving them greater compatibility with a wider variety of AAs, Sprint+Hammer being a prime example. No matter what, the sword has a unique and unprecedented weakness that creates a fundamental imbalance between it and the other weapons, reducing its efficacy far below what is necessary.
