In Response To: SWORD BLOCK CONFIRMED FOR REACH. (munky-058)

I'm with BS on this one. There's several reasons why I wish the sword block was gone.

1. It's Unnecessary

The sword is already extremely limited, with a maximum range of about 8 meters. Past that, it is 100% useless. CQC weapons, especially the two melee weapons, are unique in that they're useless outside of their dominant range. While sniper weapons are dominant at long range, they are still very useful at mid range and can even be useful at close range since you can no-scope with them. Rockets and similar high-explosive projectile weapons dominate mid-range combat, but can also be used at close range, albeit with the risk of injury or death to the user, and can even be used at long range if the user is good at leading, or their target isn't moving or paying attention, or they're just plain lucky.

The sword was already balanced enough in Halo 3. In Halo 2, you could argue it was imbalanced as a CQB weapon since it had infinite battery and player could insta-lunge with it upon drawing it by hitting Y then immediately hitting RT, plus there were no other weapons suitable enough to effectively counter it at close range, especially since the H2 shotgun sucked. However, this isn't a problem in Halo 3, since the sword has limited battery, the player must have it fully drawn before being able to attack with it, and the shotgun is vastly improved over its H2 incarnation. In fact, some might say the shotgun is as good if not better than the sword in H3. Add onto all this the highly limited range of the sword, and there's really no way anyone could realistically refer to the sword as unbalanced.

This all being the case, there really is no reason to further nerf the sword, especially considering that the shotgun is even more effective than in Halo 3 and is therefore even more of an effective counter.

2. It's Inconsistent

For the first time in a Halo game, a weapon can be blocked by a standard action rather than some specialized equipment or effect (e.g., bubble shields, armor lock, the hammer's shockwave), and I can't help but ask myself "Why?". Why does the sword and the sword alone need be able to be blocked, especially by something as simple as a melee, when no other power weapon can be blocked by equally simplistic means?

The sword block becomes an even more inconsistent game mechanic once you consider the sword's close relative the gravity hammer. The hammer cannot be blocked yet it is arguably more effective than the sword since it has a longer battery life and can thus garner the player more kills with it, plus is has an area-effect shockwave that can force players and vehicles away and can deflect certain projectiles. The only disadvantage the hammer has compared to the sword is how it consumes energy — battery life is depleted with each swing instead of only when it kills someone — but this really isn't a factor for anyone with any experience with the weapon.

3. Xbox Live

As people like Avateur have pointed out, online play poses more problems for the sword block due to the omnipresence of latency. If we narrow the window for when a melee can block a sword strick. Latency becomes more of a factor. If we extend the window for a sword block, latency is less of a factor but makes the sword more and more useless. None of this would be an issue if there is no sword block.

IMO, the sword block is a bad and totally unnecessary mechanic, and will be the one big problem I'll have with what will be an overall very well-polished and balanced combat experience. While I was hoping Bungie would remove it, this doesn't seem like it'll happen. I should've figured as much since it was one of the only things that they never addressed post-beta. I supposed I can live with it if the block merely deflected the sword and nothing else (no damage to the sword user), but I'd just rather see it gone.
