I think Martin Duffy is perfectly justified in looking for a darker story behind Halo. I loved the backs-to-the-walls fighting in Fall of Reach. The impression that the Fleet were not even holding their own made ground enagagements that much more important. It also made Fleet engagements into something epic and powerful - the idea that the crews of every human ship were pitting their combined skills against a far superior enemy with a snowball's chance of winning was far more human than overcoming those odds. As for the brutally massacred part, even that is being rewritten. Harvest was destroyed with no survivors. Now we find out that Johnson was there and went all Moses on that shit, leading his people to freedom. The more recent fiction is definitely more kid-friendly. To summarise: The importance of the victories in the games and novels are minimalised if there is no history of total defeat in the past. You can't have every protagonist win every fight, you lose the suspense. Like in Contact Harvest, you knew all along Johnson was going to survive, so why bother reading?
