In Response To: Hitting 5000 - How will they hold you for Reach? (FyreWulff)

The notion of completely hiding TS is alluring especially considering Gears and CoD have already made the jump, but deep down I'm against it. I think a visible rank gives people a reason to play. Anyone can grind away for long enough and get a bajillion EXP, but not everyone can reach level 50. In my opinion, there needs to be a metric that shows a player is good rather than they just play the game nonstop. Looking through a less-opinionated lens, we see that this would completely obviate ranked play. This doesn't mean as much in other games as much as id does in Halo, particularly with respect to guests. If there is just one playlist type, there can either be guests allowed universally or no guests allowed universally. Guests make for a more social experience on a personal level, but skew TrueSkill pairings and can potentially just serve as punching bags for better players. Current;y, if players want a challenge, they can just go to guest-free ranked playlists. This can't happen if there are no ranked playlists.

I think it's time for a radical revamping of online Halo multiplayer. H3's system was just a rehash of Halo 2's with a few tweaks here and there. Nothing significantly new or meaningful was brought to the table. I'd personally like to see social gameplay as a whole superceded by a custom games browser. This would put more control in the hands of the player than in H2 or H3. Let players search for certain gametypes and maps with specific criteria and once they're in the room, they stay until everyone leaves or they leave. Teams are made completely autonomously. Custom gametypes and maps would be welcome. Ranked play however would be matched in a more traditional manner with Bungie's maps and rules. This sort of goes back to the entire point of ranked, which is to give something to the player that they can't get in social (otherwise, everyone would play the awesome social gametypes and ranked play would die). Whether or not there should be some reward for playing social depends on whether it is implemented in a way such that it cannot be manipulated. I haven't really thought about this implementation, but I think a way exists.

Anyway, I read the op in bits over the course of a few days, so I'm not entirely sure if this is even relevant. I also don't feel like scrolling up. Apologies if it's not relevant.
