Did it ever occur to you that maybe the Halo : rings just don't work? That. Would. Be beautiful. The Forerunners go through all this angst and wipe out entire civilizations... for nothing. Though in their defense, the idea all along was that the Rings can't kill Flood anyway. It can only destroy the sentients the Flood requires in order to advance itself into an interstellar threat. -- Steve thinks that once you've killed off all its thralls, then the Flood is stuck wherever it is and only a threat should another means of transport stop by.
