Oh make no mistake about it, that kind of thing has certainly been done before.

But out of all the many many VTOL designs that were created and experimented with throughout the 50's and 60's, only one became an operational success.
That was the Harrier, and it worked because it was very simple.
You have a single big engine and divide the thrust through 4 swivelling nozzles.
I actually uploaded a video ages ago explaining how a Harrier hovers, who'd have thought it would ever be remotely relevant.

That is a simple and elegant solution.
When the came to replacing the Harrier with the JSF, the X-32 used the same basic principle.
The X-35 is a bit more complicated, but its still using a single engine.
(There was also the Soviet Yak-38 and Yak-141, which used multiple engines, but neither of those could really be called a success. The Yak-38 was so heavy and limited in power it could barely take-off with any weapons)

The idea of an aircraft with a tilt-wing, like the V-22 was thought of and experimented with at the same time. But the V-22 only entered service in 2005, by which time the Harrier had already celebrated its 36th year of service. Getting the V-22 to work was a massive technical challenge.

The problem with trying to create a jet-borne aircraft with multiple engines is that the thrust has to be absolutely perfectly balanced between each of them. You're balancing an aircraft on hot gas. Think of it like trying to balance a thumbtack on its point.

And an engine that rotates, as opposed to just a nozzle that moves, is still a very complicated bit of engineering all on its own.
Certainly possible, just not simple or easy.
