Have a look at the AI in the main series of games. In Halo 1 and 2, the Elites in particular had this obsession with trying to melee the Flood, which was of course completely ineffective. Especially annoying in Halo 2 when they were your allies and dying all around you because they wouldn't just backpeddle and shoot. Point is, Bungie themselves aren't completely innocent of AI units that don't think either "This isn't working" or "This doesn't make sense" and change their behaviour accordingly. As an RTS game, its up to you, the player, to keep tabs on your units and try to keep them in a position of advantage. If the AI had that level of intelligence and could do all that on their own, there wouldn't really be anything for the player to do at all. Whenever a Halo Wars topic comes up here, I always feel really sorry for the guys at Ensemble. I can't help but wonder if this game would be looked at differently, even if it was identical in terms of content, if only it had a Bungie sticker on it instead.
