(-mortensenj) : PS - FMD's [flurecent multi-layered disks] are the way forward... they hold : around 100gig and are made of glass / a glass like material [MUCH harder : to damage]. But DVD's will have to do for now. Its not really the material that matters as the fact that the material fluoresces in contact with laser. The problem nowadays is that multi-layered disks(DVDs having 2) having more than 2 layers can cause various problems with interactions between the laser and light reflected/refracted off layers and interactions between the lights bounced themselves. The beauty is that the light brought to the read out system operates at a different wavelength than the laser itself, thus preventing possible interactions and the such. Thus the data reaches the read out coherently and we greatly increase data capacity as mentioned with over 50-100 layers on one disk. Cool is the only thing to describe this.
