Halo: Oni Revisited | |

First, Oni. A game with huge potential, Oni was dumbed down to nab a Teen rating for the PS2. Tekken-like flashes, total absence of blood -- in my opinion the game was Bungie's biggest mistake. But surely, with Halo, they will redeem themselves, as they should have done with Oni while the Bungie fanbase was reeling from the whole Microsoft-assimilation shock. But when I saw the Teen rating on Halo, my worst fears sprung from the back of my brain and slapped me in the face. Bungie is dumbing down Halo for the consoles as well. But then my better sense kicked in. Look at Marathon and Myth. Those games were of infinitely superior quality to Oni and sported lots of blood and guts, realistically and not to the extreme of Soldier of Fortune. Bungie wouldn't add colored flashes and invisible blood to Halo, the game everyone has been dying to play for more than two years. And while I know from the gameplay movies that there are, indeed, no impact flashes and there are actually a few splats of blood, I feel that Bungie is pushing for a Teen rating for the sole reason that more kids would be allowed to buy a cool-looking Teen game than a cool-looking Mature game. I mean, what else could explain the vast difference between the levels of gore in Myth and Halo? What if they had tried to get Myth a Teen rating? Say goodbye to having any fun with dwarven grenades or satchel charges, because there's no gibbing people around here, it's a family game! Heck, wights probably wouldn't even be in the game at all! And that Soulblighter fellow, he should wear a mask or something because his skinless face could unsettle ten year olds. I can see we may have a hard time encountering a villain of Balor's or Soulblighter's stature and bad-assedness in Halo, so we can probably hope to see something like Muro in the Covenant ranks. In a Teen rated game, you have to make sure your content is not objectionable, obviously. That means that you are going to have one hell of a time scaring the player shitless, or make a longtime Halo fanboi mutter "Awesome." Very few swear words in Teen rated games, either. No siree bob, these battle hardened marines on the front lines have squeaky clean mouths. "Dang, Johnny, they got me. Those fricking sons of biscuits got me cornered in this poophole outnumbered twenty to one. Oh, fudge, here they come." Don't expect to see me waiting in the virtually nonexistant line for an Xbox. This worries... no, alarms me, because ever since I started up my little Halo fanboi website two years back, I had vivid dreams of the game. No, really. Not playing the game, but being a marine IN the game, only it wasn't a game, we were fighting these damned Covies for the ringworld one inch at a time. If I blast an unlucky Cov trooper with a 120mm tank shell, he is going to explode and his contrails will paint the surrounding terrain. He will not fly through the air and slide across the grass, free of blue blood. I want to scream, "Oh, yeah!" when I detonate a plastic explosive on the overturned jeep in the midst of their ranks and watch the closest ones reduced to kibble and the outer ones fly through the air and hit a tree or a rock, leaving believable plasma behind. I don't want to scream, "WTF?" when an explosive throws an enemy against the wall, or against a window (like in Oni) and his body merely slides to the floor supinely, instead of smashing against the wall or through the window as was promised in the BungieVision that came with my copy of Myth II. I trust Bungie. I really do. They are without a doubt the finest game developer of all, in my opinion (Well, until Oni. Then, Blizzard with its flawless track record looks mighty appealing, but its fanbase is mainly composed of pre-teens and posers, like Counter-Strike), and I believe that Halo will come out the best it could possibly be. However... I would kill to see an M rating on the computer version. |
