Could I hear some kind of rationalization on this?

you forget the possiblity that they could just leverage whole plots and settings from the original series as if it were just an amazingly detailed game world, rather than one building on the history of another, people who haven't played marathon would never know the difference...

I was pissed off enough when SONY muscled into the console market, now MS is doing the same thing... much more and there won't be any developers left for machines developed by console gaming companies (you guys remember SEGA and Nintendo, right?). Each of these companies if left up to thier own devices probably would've gone the way of NEC (ala Bonk), instead they just sap talent from other companies in a kiss of death.
Good job bungie, not only are you causing a problem with Mac development (as if MS is going to start shipping Mac games (it might happen once but I GUARANTEE it will be "phased out")) but you simultaneously caused one in the console market. I hope the Xbox flops and you all collectivly realize the fruit of all your labor went unplayed because in a moment of weakness money stood higher than principles. No matter how good the deal seems you have just moved under the umbrella of a company that is historically unscrupulous and rarley shows any compuction about cannabalizing it's own divisions or products (or partners for that matter).

I will buy Oni and when I do it will be a solemn event as I reflect on the spirit of a once-great company and what it might have been had it continued making games.

In short- monopolies exist because we allow them to.
