: I've always assumed that the Halo works similarly. The only problem I have with this theory is that both Earth and Venus still have atmospheres. A nova would throw out huge amounts of plasma, not just radiation, which would most likely blow away most of the atmosphere of our planet. And Venus, being closer, would be affected even more severely. I don't know how far Threshold is from its sun, but from the view out of the Pillar of Autumn's bridge, it doesn't look like it is as far away as Pluto is from our Sun. Nevertheless, assuming a similar year for Threshold and Pluto does allow me to make a point. 10,000 local years (that's the amount of time that has passed from the last firing of the Halos according to the books, right?) for Pluto is about 2.85 million Earth years. Hominids evolution had been well on its way to producing humans by 2.85 million years ago, so we can assume that it would have been considered a target at that time if the Halos had been around then. If the sun had lost enough mass in an artificial nova to kill off all large animals, which would most likely result in the loss of Earth's atmosphere, we wouldn't be here talking about it. For the sake of argument, if we assume that Threshold's year is around a whopping 100 times longer than Pluto's, then 10,000 Threshold years ago could be around 285 million Earth years ago. This would put the previous firing of the Halo interestingly close to the Great Dying at the end of the Permian, which marks the end of the Paleozoic Era at about 250 million years ago, during which about 90% of all know species went extinct. Reptiles with more than sufficient biomass to sustain the Flood were around at the time, so we can still assume that Earth would have been a target for the Halos. But despite the mass extinction, the atmospere was intact, and dinosaurs and other large animals continued to populated the planet. Using artificialy created novae to fight your enemies is a neat idea, but unless Threshold's local year is more than a hundred times that of Pluto, it doesn't seem to fit the evidence. I don't think the Halos use such an indirect method of killing Flood food. LietLives: crushing Louis' puny theories. Bwa ha ha! |
