In Response To: Re: HOW or WHAT does halo actually do to kill? (Dark Bastion) : Hmm. Good points. But assuming the Flood break out, they're contained on
: No? The Sentinels are for managing the Flood on Halo. It seems to me that a surface breakout wouldn't necessitate the annihlation of life in the galaxy. Only the imminent danger of a Flood escape from the ring, or it already happening, would be grounds for activating the main weapon. The only justification (if it can possibly be construed as such) for the mass sterilization of the galaxy would be the escape of the Flood from the installation. However, this leaves us with a few possibilities as to why 343 Guilty Spark wanted us to fire Halo so early on in the process. 1)The monitor has gone insane, or at least his programming has slightly degenerated, and he panics. 2) The capture of a spaceworthy vessel by the Flood is imminent. As there were several Covenant ships in the Halo system, not just the Truth and Reconciliation, there could have been an undamaged ship falling into the hands of the Flood. 3) The Flood actually got off the ring in a captured vessel. I don't think I need to mention any of the possible implications of this. Also, one more thing about how I don't think Halo destroys itself: The Monitor tells the Chief "Last time, you asked me, if it were my choice, would I do it. Having had considerable time to ponder your query, my answer has not changed. We must activate the ring." This insinuates that the Halos must have been fired at a prior date.
