I think we know it kills only sentient life - I know, it may kill stuff of "sufficent biomass" but my belief is that flood can only eat sentient life - so the real question is how its method of destruction destroys sentient life while leaving the rest intact?

Neutron bombs kill everything living. I am unaware of any currently understood scientifically based method for determining sentience, so this whole thing is wild speculation.

I'll theorize that sentient brains generate electrical fields with certain characteristics. The HALO weapon targets these, and snuffs out all sentient brains in the same manner that an EMP pulse snuffs out electronics.

However, there's no evidence for this theory (or any other) as far as the game and books go.
