You are correct about that. The pyramid is meant to be neither aztec nor mayan, and while some may think Egyptian based on that according to the PID Story page, it's meant to be completely alien and yet it seems to have Egyptian references from the skeletons/zombies, sentinels and the hieroglyphs in the lower floors.
