Scratch starting is in fact one of the rules of the Vidmaster’s Challenge (http://marathon.bungie.org/vidmaster/vidrules.html), but it’s possible to follow the Oath of the Vidmaster, which is less specific, while not actually vid-starting every level. (However, most of the Oath of the Vidmaster also does not apply to Marathon 1.) Jason Jones’ original formation of the Vidmaster’s Challenge (http://marathon.bungie.org/vidmaster/vidchallenge.html) does in fact specifically require vid starts for every level, which is why they’re so nicknamed.
