I'll have to recheck the dates (as I said, don't have my book with me.) The books ARE Halo canon, or at least as canon as you can get. Ghosts of Onyx and Fall of Reach (both of which I have right here with me) are copywright Microsoft. I believe that makes them officially liscensed. Further, Eric Nylund (who wrote both of them as well as the third book and is also employed as a writer at Microsoft Game Studios) and Joseph Staten (Contact Harvest -- he's also writing director over at Bungie) both work at Bungie/Microsoft and have worked on the story development for Halo's lore, history, backstory, and continuing story development. ...that is to say, it's about as canon as you can get outside of an official game being released with these storylintes, I'd think... : People who've never heard of suspended animation either as a line of research
Well, cryogenics is far less out there than FTL travel, but it's also kinda iffy too. Besides which, there's a little less dramatic effect when you go that rout. Consider: "Go to warp factor 9.1 raised to the million! We gotta get to that battle NOW!" ...versus... "Alright, just gotta jump in the cryo bed and sleep for the ten year trip. Then we can wake up and get into that battle! Oh yeah...and since the com took 10 years to get here, I guess the battle will have been going on for 20 years. That means they'll be happy to see us get there to help out, I bet!" See the problem? ^_^ Oh, and time dilation works in the opposite direction. If you're traveling close to the speed of light, your clock ticks slower, your delta-t is gonna be bigger. That is to say, time in the universe around you is what's traveling faster. So if you go .99c to get somewhere, what seems to you to be an hour may very well be 10 hours to the outside universe (if you want, I could get an exact number, just chug through the relation with .99c in place of v in the gamma term...but the point is clear enough.) So time dialation actually slows you down, it doesn't speed you up. In a kind of weird way, it's the universe's way of bringing ballance and making things more difficult for us poor lil' sentient primates. ^_^
