Probably not too likely.. but let's just say that either Halo or Marathon takes place in the same timeline, but so far into the future that they don't even use the same calendar anymore! So when it says that Marathon takes place before Halo, it really takes place after. Maybe the Covenant obliterate the human race so they have to start all over again, and could be dating things from the time when the last of their FTL ships were destroyed. That could make sense.
