hehe I think UESC (UNSC, same thing) would say: "Poor Marathon ppl, let them arrive at Tau Ceti and then inform them about the FTL, muahahahahaha"
Maybe the colonist, should have known about the war between the Covenant and humans, and Halos existance... maybe they did in fact, but not mentioned on the Marathon series, or they didn't care as they were independent from the Sol system, or they didn't even know about what happened.
I insist, there are a too many coincidences between both games.
