The Marathon uses an AM FM radio transmitter. It would take YEARS and DECADES to recieve a message from earth or to actualy send one themselves.

Maybe the war between the Covenant and Earth erupted years after the Marathon's Departure. And by the time the Marathon reached Tau Ceti, the war was probably over, and there may not have been enough resources to warn the Marathon.
But what kind of technology do the Covenant have? DO they have an FTL drive?
