In Response To: Re: movie? forget it. (John Denton) : I think the general idea is that one movie would encompass one game, not the
I actually think the second movie would make a "better" movie by Hollywood standards. Everything is bigger, the plot is more epic, the action can get a lot more spectacular, there's colossal space battles, the humans actually fight back... In fact I think the Marathon trilogy nicely follows a pretty standard trilogy format for sci-fi/action movies. The first one is comparatively small, could stand on it's own, and mostly introduces the characters and revolves the immediate problem with is the focus of the plot. The second one takes off from there, revealing that that whole story was but a small part of a more epic one waiting to be told, which this second part begins to tell, ending with a dramatic cliffhanger. The third part is usually very different from the earlier ones, diverging in some unexpected way to account for the cliffhanger at the end of Part II: witness things like Back to the Future Part III, and The Matrix Revolutions. In other trilogies the third movie returns somewhat to the feel of the first while keeping parts of the second, ala Alien 3. I think Infinity fits well into both of of these part-three categories, and all of the above examples and Marathon also follow the formula of the first two parts. Hell, now that I mention it it's looking like Halo if following the same formula. Of course not all trilogies follow this: Lord of the Rings certainly didn't, and neither did the Star Wars prequels (although the original Star Wars movies did). But it seems a pretty standard formula, and Marathon fits if nicely. |
