In Response To: Re: Movie (John Denton)

: I don't think it is strictly necessary for a film adaptation to make a
: distinction between BOBs and "the marine." These are titles that
: possess more significance in a game world where the player character must
: be differentiated from everyone else. There's no reason that the on-screen
: characters need to behave the same in the movie as in the game. That's not
: to say we couldn't have a certain security officer who turns out to be
: different from the rest of the crew, but that does not necessarily limit
: our focus. A movie following Marathon would (at least to begin) probably
: focus on the event and the characters affected by it, instead of capturing
: a single cause and effect chain perpetuated by one person.

This is the way I always imagined a Marathon movie would have to be made. Somewhat similar to your typical "disaster" type movie - you introduce characters going about their lives, some of whom will later turn out to be main characters and others who are just side stories, then a big event happens and we get to see how they all interact with that event, some of their actions being significant in the outcome of that event.

For Marathon, I imagine we would meet various crew members and colonists, some of whom we don't know, and some of whom we do. I'd suggest following Bernhard and his associates on the Marathon, and Blake and his associated on the colony - and of course the Security Officer, and possibly other cyborgs on the colony that Blake & co meet. Probably start on the colony, winding up following the SO on the Miriata going up to Marathon - and using that trip as time to give brief voiceover/daydream backstory info. Then when the Pfhor attack, cut to Bernhard and the Marathon command crew and their reactions trying to contain things.

Follow those three plot lines - Blake & co, Bernhard & co, and the Security Officer - as they react to the situation. With the SO, I think a mix of what I earlier described (trying to solve some problem while being spoken to by the various AIs) with some interaction at terminals (which I would involve a video element in; he's speaking to virtual people inside the screen, not just reading and typing). The one-way communication of AI to SO would give opportunities for some of Durandal's longer soliloquies, while the interactive two-way communication at terminals would give a chance to develop the SO's character some. He could also have actual human interaction, both on the colony before he takes off in the Miriata, and on the Marathon whenever he encounters Bobs. And the more complex interactions amongst the groups of Bobs would provide more interesting character development and space to develop original content for the movie, fleshing out what's only alluded to in the games.

But eventually both Bernhard and Blake are captured or killed by the Pfhor. Bernhard's capture (and death?) becomes a part of the SO's missions with Durandal. Blake and company perhaps encountered the rest of the cyborgs on the colony (though we may not know that they were such just yet), and so his capture sets the stage for the surprise at the end, Leela's revelation that the invasion of the colony has been repelled too. And so in the end we wind up with the Security Officer all alone with Durandal, trying to save the day, the S'pht rebellion, the capture of the Pfhor ship, and a climactic final battle. Then we find Leela is still alive, who tells us of what has happened on the colony, and of the rebuilding that will have to be done. The SO finishes talking to her, starts walking away and is unexpectedly transported into a Pfhor stasis chamber on board. The last we see of him is angrily pounding on the glass of the stasis chamber as it fogs over and he stops moving.

The camera slowly pulls backward from his chamber down a long hall lined with stasis pods. Two compilers pass each other in the hall. The camera eventually pulls back through a window and we see the Pfhor ship moving away from the Marathon, and then folding out of the system. And all the while, echoing throughout the ship and continuing as we pull out into space... Durandal is laughing.

To be continued.

The other big advantage of involving Blake so much is that it gives a nice segue into the sequel, which would of course similarly follow the actions of Blake and the rest of the Bobs on the colony.

I wouldn't recommend making a movie out of Infinity, unless a *lot* of emphasis was put on the W'rk legends during the M2 plotline, perhaps having Thoth make a big deal about it toward the end (hence why he tries to help the Pfhor - so they don't have to resort to such measures), and an obvious OMGWTFwasthat? effect of some sort when the nova goes off - perhaps, as described in the Infinity prologue, only half of the sun going nova and the rest not. And during the Infinity movie itself, it must be made far more clear that you are time travelling when you are time travelling. I know many players who didn't even get that time travel was happening, and once they did, it suddenly made sense to them.
