movie? forget it.

only very few people know about marathon so who do you expect to watch the movie? doom (the game) is known to the whole world. but marathon... a couple of guys who had a mac when they were young and a couple of aleph-ers know it, yes, but how many are they? it's a small community, not millions of people.

master plan on the doom-side was: publish a new doom-game *and* a movie a little bit later. it was clear that it would sell. a fool-proof concept.

without a remake of the marathon-games the movie wouldn't sell. and i don't talk about open source projects, i talk about an up-to-date engine, up-to-date level design, professional marketing and all that stuff. bungie - with microsoft-background - could easily do that. but only with this done before you can even think about a marathon movie. nobody would watch it.

btw: doom doesn't have any story at all. making a movie out of it is easy - just send a couple of guys into a base and let the slaughter begin. marathon deserves better - a smasher story in the game needs a smasher-story-movie!

how do you think you could pack such an elaborated story like marathon's into 90 - 120 minutes of movie? forget about that! a small part of it, yes, but not more. in order to understand the movie people would have to play the game first. but... whom do you expect to play marathon today? kids? nah, they play modern games like halo or counterstrike. ok, a few of them (but how many) play marathon, too, but only a few.

bottom line is: if you want a marathon-movie you first need to remake the games. you need them people to know the whole thing so they can understand the movie.
