In Response To: Movie (CubicCircle) : The biggest trick, as I see it, to not ruin it would be how to portray the
Problems with selecting voice actors aside, one thing that I think would help with a translation of the largely textual medium to the big screen, in keeping with your "suspense and angst" notion (which I very much like), is to have the AIs speak to the player over the Marathon's speaker system instead of just through terminals. That way instead of simply standing there at a terminal reading or listening to Durandal, say in a scene like on "Colony Ship For Sale" with that wonderful three-candles imagery, we would see the player walking or stalking about the ship alone, maybe trying to figure out some problem or another - not the particular inane puzzles of Colony Ship, but something similar where the player has to do a lot of work moving cranes or extending catwalks in order to get somewhere, which can be told entirely visually - while Durandal speaks his haunting words over the loudspeaker. This solves two problems at once, keeping the otherwise boring lonely visual action interesting by accompanying it with what would otherwise be a boring monologue. The closest cinematic equivalent that I can think of is Dave deactivating HAL in "2001". Dave is doing a lot of stuff that is almost entirely visual, and barely speaking a word himself, while HAL speaks to Dave constantly throughout that scene. It creates a very lonely one-way interaction, one character toiling away with no help from the other, while the other just sits there, watching, and rambles on philosophically. |
