In Response To: I hate this title (Forrest of B.org) : I am very angry and at work right now so I'll try to make this brief and not
Brief and not full of profanity? Forrest, I don't need to tell you how to live your life. I think what you've done with Eternal is really cool. I would never attempt to build a scenario myself - I love playing them, but I don't have the patience to do anything more than volunteer serieses. My problem in life has always been that my own expectations are too high, which can really tick off other people, but I expect the best from me and tend to expect comparable effort from everyone else. The last thing I wanted was to make you feel that everyone's expectations are too high for you. But let me explain where I'm coming from. Cool tricks are nice, but they do not make a great scenario. PF has quickly become one of my alltime favorites. But what does it have? It uses the M1 game engine. It uses low-res textures - many of them borrowed from M1. It uses mostly the original shapes and the new ones it introduces really suck. But I love the scenario. At the end of the day, it's the gameplay that counts. And the story. Now I'm not trying to compare Eternal to PF, but I really think that the best way to get ideas for level layout is to play other people's scenarios. Don't worry about the textures. Don't worry about scenery objects for now. Just focus on level layout and monster population. This is what really counts. You can always go back and add the embelishments later. And if you feel bad, just think about how Chris and Scott felt after the initial reviews for Rubicon came in, after 5 years of hard work. I always thought that those reviews were too harsh and in some ways self-serving, but Rubicon was a truly great scenario. I have every confidence that Eternal will be outstanding when it's finished. Oh, one final piece of advice that echoes something else that was said. When I was in school, a medical resident gave me a very important treatise on swimming with sharks. The advice was very helpful for people in an academic medical center, where sharks are highly abundant, but it applies to most aspects of life as well. The bottom line is that no matter how severely bitten, you must never bleed. This forum has been exceptionally polite, but bleeding often leads to a feeding frenzie, and that's not a very pretty sight. Guess I'll put that DSM IV back on the shelf now. |
