In Response To: Re: Eternally Bored (Steve Levinson)

: Thanks for taking this all in stride, Forrest. I really wanted this to be
: constructive feedback. I wrote this after making a 14 hour drive from
: Chicago to Rochester and at a time when I was very frustrated with level
: 6. I've since given level 6 another stab on Kindergarten and managed to
: finish it, and I have to admit that level 7 was very, very cool, even if
: the fish-eye effect has already been done in Rubicon. Just a suggestion -
: make your fisheye power-ups invisible - that's how they did it in Rubicon.

Ah, I didn't even remember that being done in Rubicon... honestly I kinda flew through that scenario, was rather short on time them. As if I'm not now...

: I'm now about to go back and try to figure out what I did wrong - a cool
: concept, but I really hope I don't have to repreat level 5, which is the
: weakest of the bunch so far.

Remember to use the pattern buffers at the start, that way if you reach the end and find out you've failed, you can at least go back to the first saved game and try again from there, instead of making the whole loop.

: BTW, the Eternal website seem to be down right now.

Right, all of Psyjnir is down for maintainance. Should be back up by Wednesday in theory.

: I appreciate everything you've done with Eternal, but releasing a bunch of
: maps that aren't yet ready for prime time can be worse than nothing,
: particularly if you turn players off and then you do manage to get a
: final version out. Look at how many of us had a negative opinion of Red,
: even though that one is a damn good scenario. I recognize that your team
: is somewhat inexperienced and I realize that the response to your public
: beta release was miniscule. Take it from me - you will get a lot more beta
: testers by asking people personally to test than by making a general
: announcement. I'll beta test anything you send me, Forrest - it may take
: me some time, but I won't refuse you - you just have to ask. I bet that
: there are a dozen or more regular readers of the forum who will do the
: same, but who probably won't test if you just make a general announcement.
: As you can probably guess - I'm a harsh tester - just ask Blayne about
: that one - but I'm fair and often come up with ideas that will make you
: rethink your approach.

Ok, I think I'll do that soon then. My experience in the past with personally asking people to beta test was an initial "OK" followed up by nothing, so I figured I'd just let those who were actually interested approach me themselves. Guess that didn't work either.

: Texture-wise, perhaps bland isn't the right word, but M1 did have a lot more
: variety, and it really looked metalic. Your textures look like surfaces
: made from concrete and then all sanded exactly the same way with a
: circular sander. Improve the Marathon? Why not? Add more details? Great
: idea! Abandon the overall look and feel? Probably not a good idea.

I never really thought of Marathon as all that metallic. Sure, it's obviously metal in some places, but the entire thing was carved out of a moon - I always thought it was mostly shaped rock, basically concrete like you said. There are three materials used in my Marathon texture set, a canvas-like stuff used for wallpaper in "cleaner" areas, a concrete-like stuff for floors and such, and that dented metal which is obviously metal. And again, a lot of people have said they think it does resemble the Marathon much more than I even tried to make it, so unless I get a lot more people with this same complaint I'm gonna chalk this up to artistic differences of opinion.

: As far as difficult is concerned - I didn't have any real problems on TC
: until I hit level 6 (BTW, why don't the level names appear in map view?).

I hadn't noticed that they didn't. I just checked on my end and they do show up... anybody else having Steve's problems with level names on the map?

: Your infinitely regenerating monsters make play on TC essentially
: impossible. Even if you can survive to reach the tower where the chip slot
: goes, you cannot exit the tower - a squadron of monsters will almost
: always block the way. On kindergarten you can thin the ranks before going
: up, but they regenerate too quickly and are too aggressive on TC. Slow
: down the regeneration rate and you should be fine - this is actually one
: of the better levels.

Hmm. I always managed to shoot my way out of there with either a Scattergun, a grenade or two (as the platform's still lowering) and a lot of bullets, or a Fusion battery or two. Haven't played it on TC though cause, as I said, I suck. I'll look into fixing that part. Thanks.

: I'll provide more feedback once I have more of a chance to play the rest -
: and if I can ever figure out how to get beyond level 7!

The hints are all around in the terminals and I think it's pretty obvious so I'll just tell you what's up: it's a race against time. (The network is resynching soon and you have to smash the relay before it does). The timer starts when you push the first switch to exit that opening arena, and then you have 3 minutes 14 seconds to smash both sets of wires and reach the exit terminal. You can avoid most of the monsters on that level if you just run around them, there's only I think... 11 total past the opening arena that you actually have to confront directly (4 hunters, 3 compilers, 4 troopers), and those are usually alone and straight ahead of you so you can just throw shots at them while you keep running.

(I try to make my timed-split levels actually hard to beat in time, both because I want a good number of people to see the Failure branch, and also because the one or two of those in Rubicon, I managed to wander my way randomly around and get out of them in plenty of time with barely any effort, so I thought it should be a little more pressing in Eternal).
