Ok Forrest, your points are strong, but I still don't completely agree with you... if devs had started AO project with this kind of attitude about not improving the engine 'cos it is old and it would be better to pick another engine to port Marathon, we wouldn't have OpenGL powered effects, MML or Pfhortran/Lua or internet multiplayer games. Cool features like file linking(you can link two map files, shapes, sounds, etc.. without changing the preferences, like if you finish m1a1 and immediatly you start m2 without having to quit the game) could be done to enhace AO, swinging doors and horizontal moving plattaforms(like those on Damage Incorporated) could be also done to give the scenario makers more options. Prime Target, another game with the m2 engine had a particle system, and even blood splats on the walls, it also had more interactive scenography; you could move object like chairs, and use them as a cover for the bullets. I think that all those enhacements could be done to make sweeter the experience of playing Marathon and its scenarios, and I think that they aren't so hard to implement to AO (if it could be done on the other m2 engine games with software rendering), but for some reason, community is so obstinate in not to implement them... believe me if knew how to code'em I would do it and because I do really have interest in improving AO, I'll send missives to coder and developers, just to find someone with enough free time and will to implement those. I'm making a scenario, and the reason I chose Marathon, was because it is easier to modify than the newer engines, it is a looooooooooooooooot better than other 2.5 d engines, like doom engine, and it has support for story-line, differently from the build engine that offers more capabilities than Marathon engine, but reason I didn't chose this one was because it is not as fun as Marathon, and I just love Marathon... Doom 3, Half Life 2, Unreal, and other engines(Halo being the exception) aren't just as fun as Marathon (IMHO) And I think that Anvil and Forge should have been gone to the open source as well.... Those should be re-made to fit OSX and AO capabilities, and to improve the game(more weapons, aliens, effects, walls, etc.) I hope you didn't bore you |
