it is utterly absurd to compare the mod scenes of games that are, respectively, ten+, nine, five+, six+, five+, and ten YEARS old to games that are six+ and three+ MONTHS old. (and i don't even count halo in this. suffice it to say it "didn't catch on" for a bunch of reasons) and it is not the complexity of the tools, it's the games themselves. these days any idiot can make a shitty map easier than ever before, and these maps are indeed being uploaded. for example, hl2 deathmatch had over 250+ maps released for it within a few weeks of its release, but most of these are either quickie hl1 conversions that are just simply cruel on the eyes, or the work of some retard who pumped a map out in 30 minutes. the point is that while the tools are easier to use than they ever have been before, it takes more effort now to produce a mod or map that measures even close to the standards presented in the original, commercial game. the wave of shitty maps and mods doesn't make it easier for good ones to stand out, either. : maps being made, but how many "Marathon Resurrection" - style
again - what you expect after such a short period of time is beyond me. give it some time! there are loads of ambitious projects out there - although how many will actually make it to release is left to be seen - and hordes of maps and a few mods already released (check out garry's mod for hl2). finding information on all of them isn't really that hard, it's just more difficult to tell which ones are, or will be, the better ones. |
