In Response To: Earth and Taking/Breaking Prisoners (DuckofDoom) : Let's get this straight out right here and ask the question- : Why did it take so long for the Covenant to find Earth, and why did they only : do so by random chance that we live on a Forerunner planet? : The Elites seem to think that Reach was the Human homeworld. ("Where : were you when we burned your planet?" and "They fled, while we : burned their planet." seem to place emphasis on the last word.) The : Prophets have mysterious motives. This is all standard stuff. : But why didn't the Covenant just start torturing people until they got an : answer as to where the homeworld is? They'd invariably get some sort of : distance. Everybody seems to know how close they are to Earth (some random : guy says 10.9 LY or some such number like he knows it). Coral is 17 Light : Years away, give or take. : So why not just abduct some random person, Marine or otherwise (Preferrably a : Naval Officer in charge of Astrogation), and start breaking fingers until : they give you a distance from a planet you know, or to a new one where : they know the distance from it (Reach is a preeminant example)? If they : don't answer once they're out of ideas to test human physiology with, get : a new one and repeat. : Once they get an answer, they grab a star chart and a holometer stick, and : measuer how many systems are that many light years away, give or take a : bit. Proceed to every system you find. : It'd lead you right to important planets where everybody knows how far they : are from them when they immigrated- IE- the Homeworld. : However, when the Elites and their supposed brutal and cunning intelligence : get to Earth, they're as clueless as to everybody. Did they verify their : intelligence/use psychological warfare with a pathological liar as a : prisoner? : Elite: "We burned your planet, primate. Your race is doomed." : Marine: "No... Earth... it's not possible..." : Elite: "Hmm? Earth? I thought it was Reach they called it." : Marine: "Oh, yes, of course, Reach. Earth is what we called it in : Spanish." : Elite: "Of course. That makes perfect sense to me!" : Shouldn't the Enforcers of the Prophets' Will have found Earth a bit earlier : unless they're massively incompetant (always a possibility) or rather : squeemish for a bunch of crusading zealots? VERY INTERESTING, however, if you were to be tortured, thousands of marines could feed disinformation on its location, and the covenant wouldn't know if it was true or not unless the Marines mentioned a place they knew wasn't the homeworld IE..a planet that was already glassed. However they could check the marines accounts against eachother and eventually determine if they were lying or if they all said earth they'd know it was probably true. We know for a fact that the elites are very intelligent and they aren't stupid or blind, keep in mind that in Halo: The Flood, a woman of the POA crew was interrogated by the Elites as to the location of Captain keyes which she DID tell and was killed by the Elite eventually anyway. Now, this means they definitely have the ability to and have the will to interrogate humans for information, however, 1. They could think Reach is/was the homeworld and/or the Homeworld of the Humans is truly not important to the Covenant Hierarchy. Do the Covenant care for the destruction of the human race, or do they care about finding forerunner artifacts more? Personally I believe the Covenant find humans an abomination because they have forerunner artifacts on their worlds and do nothing with it *shrug*, but I digress. So it must be that they don't care that the homeworld exists and/or they think Reach was the Homeworld. But in Halo 2 they do find out Earth is the homeworld, and they start a battle, but like I said, the prophets/prophet truth, doesn't give a damn, he just wants to activate the rings.
