: But the third paragraph is interesting. While I'm sure that the creatures she
: refers to are the Flood, what of the "sun - black, but shining"
: whose "fiery
: tracks" they crawl on?

: My speculation? It's High Charity (which might be seen from an angle as a
: dark "sun" with glittering "fiery" lights on it),
: during the demise of the Forerunners, when it contained the Ark. The
: Flood, being not-dumb, probably figured out the whole scheme with the
: Halos and the Ark, and promptly decided to assault the Ark before the
: Halos were activated. There certainly may be flaws with this theory, but
: it seems possible to me.

Here's the relevant stuff from the third cortana letter. It should please you.
As an aside, I give my interpretation.

As for this world I encounter new ghosts every day. What I have found
will either save or destroy you. This sanctuary, this unbroken circle,
has effectively concealed its power for how long? Perhaps hundreds of
thousands of years. Whoever made such a place must now live in chains;
there is no other explanation for their absence.

New ghosts? The echoes of a civilization long gone.
The Halo sanctuaries have to have some benefit. Or else they'd not be worth building at all. Destroying all sentient life may actually do a lot of good-maybe we've just misunderstood the purpose of the rings.

She believes the forerunners exist, enslaved, but not extinct. Very interesting. She may have found something contrary to the knowledge of 343 guilty spark, just as the rings have been found to go contrary to the beliefs of the covenant.

This enemy - YOUR enemy - has proven more irritating than I anticipated.
They own nothing which they have not stolen. I can barely make sense of
their incessant rhetoric, except to know that you seem to be their Devil.
Congratulations - you manage to make friends wherever you go and,
apparently, places you haven't.

The covenant. Bah.

I have begun to sense rumblings of a worse fate yet to come. I can recall
a sun - black, but shining - and the creatures that inched along its fiery
tracks.

Notice that the prophets appear to be crowned with fire, just as the T&R doors have a fire symnbol on them? What's the significance of a sun's fire? What does a sun-"black, but shining" mean?

I'm assuming she means a sun that has collapsed into itself to form a balck hole. Black holes emit hawking radiation. I'll give the links later. The creatures that inched along its fiery tracks could represent the terrifying W'rkncacnter from Marathon. I think similar beings exist in the Haloverse, and they may have a small but very important role to play in Halo 3.
