: Wouldn't the destruction of Halo destroy the atmosphere? Everything created
: on Halo was artificial, the weather paterns, everything. They couldnt just
: capture something from Earth, turn it loose and expect it to do something
: on a metal ring. Like air, and the atmosphere. So once the mechanical
: parts, or engines or whatever technology runs the halo, was destroyed the
: vaccuum should be able to disrupt whatever is left of the atmosphere.
: Also, the fire would have destroyed anything that survived the explosion.
: One million degrees tempature, nothing could survive.

It was just a random thought and the details could be debated ad-infinitum but...

>>GS remarks (in the Library) that the Flood will change the atmosphere, infering that they prefer something different from Halo's Earth-like air quality. Not that they could survive in a vaccuum but they are most likely highly adaptable, which is what makes them so virulent.

>>Also, their are vast sections of Halo that would seem to be secure from the elements. The underground chasm in AotCR (if I remember right) is protected by rather large blast doors. It is resonable to assume that Halo was designed to section itself off in case of a breech, thus containing the damage. Just one of those little infections survival could potentialy be very bad.

>>Don't forget that the Flood were well on their way to repairing the PoA. They seem very capable of assimilating new technologies and using them to their advantage.

>> One million degrees is pretty hot and certainly anything nearby the PoA went it went up was toast, literally. But I bet anyone on the other side of the ring walked away with little more than a sunburn.

Like I said, it's just a thought...the point being that the Forerunner(s) were fairly smart and if they thought stopping the Flood required razing the known galaxy, Cortana's wildcat explosion ain't gonna do it.
