You have to remember that Halo's weapon doesn't wipe out the Flood, but rather their food. So why is the Flood so important for the Forerunner? Considering this, I don't think destroying the entire ring is an option for the Forerunner.

Cortana assumes that because there are more rings (as implied by 343GS).

Well, I guess that a long walk in hard vacuum would take care of the Flood, wouldn't you?
