A few random Halo questions and comments...
Posted By: LiquidexDate: 2/21/02 12:16 a.m.

Okay, I've got a number of things to say/ask about Halo but I don't want to bombard the messageboard so I'll just put them all in one nice and neat little package. :)

- Does anyone know where the name "343 Guilty Spark" comes from? The "343" part can be dismissed since it's just a number (although I hear it's got some relation to 7 and Bungie clearly has a thing for that). As for the "Spark" part, I suppose he has a spark-like appearance, I mean he's a tiny little floating spherical thing, with a big glowing light inside of him. As for "Guilty", I suppose that comes from the fact that he's in charge of facilitating and regulating the process of destroying everything within 25,000 light years, which is a pretty serious job, heh. I'm not sure though.

- What's with all the Marathon logos? I know a lot of people have mentioned this already, but I'm starting to see quite a few of them. Aside from the Marathon 2 demo I downloaded for the PC, I have virtually zero experience with/knowledge about Marathon, but even I'm noticing them now. I read on some web site that you can see a thin outline of the Marathon logo behind the H A L O letters in the logo, and you certainly can. I then noticed the Marathon logo on the sheilds in the Difficulty Level selection screen, and I just played the Maw a minute ago and the Marathon Logo is actually on the Pillar of Autumn itself. It's one thing to stick the logos in the interface and stuff, but if the Marathon was a giant starship, and the PoA is a giant starship, you can't just swap their logos around without it having a more significant meaning. Anyone have any ideas?

- I just beat the game again and was reading through the credits, and under the Personal Thanks section, I found an "M. Soel" who thanked "All hippos worldwide". I thought that was pretty cool, heh.

- I noticed a bit of a visual bug in a few levels when I use the flashlight. I noticed it first in The Library, and just saw it again in The Maw, so I assume it can be seen in Pillar of Autumn as well. Anyway, go into the hallways in the PoA, or go through those little "detour" routes that take you down through those little hallways in The Library and turn the flashlight on. You'll notice some strange glowing diagonal lines that warp around along the walls. These obviously aren't intentinoal, because they don't represent any real world visual anomoly.

I dunno how many coders there on this board, but what I'm thinking this means is that some sort of map is used in addition to the flashlight map, like the lightmaps or something (which are put to very good use in Halo). If this is the case, it seems that these maps are affine, rather than perspective correct, because the diagonal lines follow the countour of typical affine artifacts (which you can see by playing any Saturn or Playstation game). I'm not sure why this would cause the artifacts to glow so brightly, but it does definately seem to be a possibility. Anyway, if Matt knows, or if he knows anyone who would know, it'd be great if I could get some insight on that.

- Am I the only one who'd give his right arm for a Grunt doll? They're just so damn adorable! I hate to kill them now, they're just too cute to bear. I especially love the way they run when they're scared, you can really notice that in the little intro cut scene to 343 Guilty Spark when the grunts are running with the jackals through the swamps. I'd love a plush version of one of those little guys, especially if he had a little string you could pull or button you could press on his back that would make him say stuff like "BAD CYBORG!" (my personal favorite quote, heh) or his hyperventalating sound he makes when he's running from something. So howabout it Matt? Spread the word around Bungie! PLEASE! :D

- BTW - Does anyone else find it odd that sometimes the grunt will yell "Not again!" just before being killed, usually when you stick a plasma grenade to him? It seems sorta strange to imply that he's been blown up before, heh.
