Re: language

In Response To: Re: language (Louis Wu)

: It says that the suit has translation abilities built into it.

: It doesn't say WHAT languages, or how good the translations are.

: The IMPLICATION (not actually stated in the book, or the game) is that the
: Grunt language is simple enough for the suit's translators to handle,
: while the OTHER languages (jackal, elite, hunter, etc) are out of its
: league - either because they're more complicated, or because there isn't
: as much initial information.

: Hope this helps.

Yes, this helps as far as assisting in the suspension of belief which is no big deal. It's a useful detail which works when one doesn't overanalyze. Over-analyzing, however, Cortana says in the tunnel on Halo, something to you like, "I'll use your suit's transcom to monitor *their* chatter." She doesn't say, "I'll use your suit's transcom to monitor the Grunts' chatter." I've also noticed that the Elites display a lot of human features in their language, stress, and consonants /w/ and /k/, and the vowel o, as well as rising intonation and falling intonation in both the wokx3 and garbled statements. Also, someone on here said that Keyes when he was being held captive "overheard the guards talking" -- weren't those Elites? This implies that there must be resources for studying the language, and therefore resources for building a translation module that can handle Elite language, at least. It's just one of those things you have to "pretend" works.
