In Response To: Re: Let's Talk Halo 4 (Schooly D) You know, I think you hit the nail on the head on why I haven't been enjoying the multiplayer. So far, the most fun (and about the only fun) I've had in it was that, like, 7-hour-long CTF game on Valhalla that you we did for classic customs. Hearing you talk about how unrestrained Halo has always been when it comes to the sandbox and mechanics, that really drove home why. I make fun of my girlfriend for calling first-person shooters "shoot 'em ups" since that's a phrase that I don't think anyone has used since the '80s. But you know what? Halo 4 really is a shoot 'em up. In most matches, my eyes glaze over and I completely lose interest in what I'm doing. I'm just shooting enemies, and they're shooting back. Variation is limited, and even with all the armor-abilities and whatnot, the encounters all feel the same. Shoot the guy, get shot at, one of us dies, repeat. Recently (because of Halo 4) I've been hyper-nostalgic for Halo 2. How the hell was that so fun? How did I spend hundreds of hours playing thousands of matches in Halo 2 for 3 years? How was I still in love with Halo after that? Enough that I continued to play Halo 3 for hundreds of matches, and then Reach for hundreds of matches? Why, suddenly, does going into MM in Halo 4 feel like grinding work? I think you're totally right, Schooly. Halo 2 (and 3 (and even Reach)) had such minimalist mechanics. But matches were so unpredictable. Funny fucking shit happened all the time. Was that in spite of the minimalist mechanics? Nah, I think it was because of them. Instead of having a built-in solution to every scenario, you had to mix and match a couple of separate solutions to make your own. Fucking
