: I don't think that's what they're suggesting. I think that under the art

: unfortunate (apparent) lack of interest/understanding in/of the subject
: matter.

Yeah, pretty much this. I'm not saying there's a sinister conspiracy behind it, just that the artist who came up with the new design was likely informed by the team's general direction to make things look more grounded in the real world, and didn't think the issue through. This is why I've been saying 343i needs people to make sure they've got their fiction sorted out in not just the story department, but also visual/structural issues such as this one.

Admittedly, Warthog suspension is a nitpicky thing to complain about when viewed against issues like the Dawn's baffling restructuring or turning the Covenant species into Locust knockoffs, but it's all part of a bigger problem of 343i's artists not seemingly understanding what they're supposed to be designing. I'm being told the studio is made up of passionate Halo fans, but I'm having a hard time believing that an actual Halo fan would make the bizarre design decisions they've made. I get that they probably want to make their mark, show the world Halo is theirs now, but I still believe that someone who respects and understands Halo like I know many passionate fans do, would treat the visuals as a channel of fiction equal to any other, and as such refrain from changing things for no reason.

See, the question isn't whether you could, but whether you should. You can always come up with a canonical explanation for nonsensical artistic variation; "oh, they're just armor variants" or "they're subspecies" or whatever. Anything can be explained if you try hard enough (though I figure they'd have a hard time explaining what the hell happened to the Dawn), but the point still stands that artistic license run rampant wrecks havoc on the visual aspect of storytelling. There are a lot of people out there who couldn't care less about that aspect, but 343i should understand that there is also a fairly large number of visually-oriented fans who consider aesthetics an integral part of Halo fiction. As it stands, it feels like that aspect is being neglected, or treated as separate from the story and fiction itself.
